Doctoral researchers from the faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, Veterinary Medicine are welcome to attend.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Atmosf\u00e4\u00e4ris tuumakatsetuste tagaj\u00e4rjel tekkinud&nbsp;<strong>Carbon-14<\/strong>&nbsp;produced in the atmosphere as a result of nuclear weapons testing can be used to determine the age of human cells and tissues based on changes in its levels. This makes it possible to assess when cells were formed and whether, and how quickly, different tissues are renewed throughout a person\u2019s lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The proportion of carbon-14 (\u00b9\u2074C)<\/strong>&nbsp;in our food corresponds to the level of \u00b9\u2074C present in the atmosphere at that particular time. Since the carbon atoms in the DNA within a cell\u2019s nucleus are replaced only when cells divide, it is possible to estimate the rate at which cell populations in different tissues\u2014including several regions of the brain\u2014are renewed, both in health and in disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In biomedical research, this method helps to clarify the regenerative capacity of human tissues and the rate of cellular renewal in both healthy and diseased states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In forensic medicine, the method can be used, for example, to estimate the year of birth and time of death of an unidentified body by analysing the carbon-14 content of teeth and different tissues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-aab-accordion-block aab__accordion_container  accessibilityOn\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:15px;border:1px solid #bcb6b638\" id=\"aab_accordion_e3e64165_0\" role=\"button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"aab__accordion_head aab_right_icon\" style=\"background-color:#bcb6b638;border-top:none;border-right:none;border-bottom:none;border-left:none\"><div class=\"aab__accordion_heading aab_right_icon aab_right_link\"><div class=\"head_content_wrapper\"><div class=\"title_wrapper\"><h5 class=\"aab__accordion_title\" style=\"margin:0\">Lecturer<\/h5><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"aab__accordion_icon\" style=\"border:0px solid transparent\"><span class=\"aab__icon dashicons dashicons-plus-alt2\" style=\"font-size:23px\"><\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"aab__accordion_body\" role=\"region\" style=\"display:none;border-top:1px solid #bcb6b638;border-right:none;border-bottom:none;border-left:none\"><div class=\"aab__accordion_component\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lecturer is\u00a0<strong>Henrik Druid MD, PhD<\/strong>Professor, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has taught medical students, delivering more than<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>1,950 hours of lectures in forensic medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An important focus of his research in forensic medicine has been post-mortem toxicology and post-mortem biochemical analyses.
