SUMMARY:Intensive seminar: Reading with the New Frankfurt School
DESCRIPTION:5–6 September 2024\nTallinn University\, Uus-Sadama 5\, room M-135 \nGuest lecturer: Professor Rita Felski\, University of Virginia\nRegistration deadline: 26 August 2024\, register HERE \nCredits: 1 ECTS\nReading the required seminar texts is the prerequisite for participating in the course. All texts will be provided electronically to registered participants. \nHosting institutions: Tallinn University; Estonian Doctoral School of Arts and Humanities \nPresentation \nCan the claims of theory and literature be brought into a more equal balance? How does literature recast or refigure perceptions of life? And how might life—our condition of worldly enmeshment—modify the claims of theory? This workshop addresses longstanding questions about the relation between literature\, theory\, and experience by engaging a body of thought that’s terra incognita in the humanities: the writings of the present-day Frankfurt School. These writings reveal some notable similarities to current debates in literary studies. First\, they reflect on the limits—as well as the value–of critique and are developing more affirmative concepts and vocabularies. And second\, they are turning to phenomenology and accounts of human experience that do not treat persons as mere shadows cast by all-determining structures. \nThe argument of my forthcoming book is organized around what I call “experience-concepts” drawn from German thought. One lecture discusses the idea of resonance while the other revisits an older idea of lifeworld. The roundtable will examine the relationship between literature\, theory\, and experience\, and the seminar will focus on the epistemological and political stakes of intellectual work. \nAbout guest lecturer: \nRita Felski holds the John Stewart Bryan Professorship of English at the University of Virginia and is a former editor of New Literary History. She was also Niels Bohr Professor at the University of Southern Denmark (2016–2021). She was educated at Cambridge University and pursued graduate work in Australia\, earning an M.A and Ph.D at Monash University. Her current research centers on aesthetics\, method\, and interpretation\, but she also have longstanding interests in feminist theory\, modernity and postmodernity\, genre (especially tragedy)\, comparative literature\, and cultural studies. She is the author of Beyond Feminist Aesthetics (Harvard UP\, 1989)\, The Gender of Modernity (Harvard UP. 1995)\, Doing Time: Feminist Theory and Postmodern Culture (New York UP\, 2000)\, Literature After Feminism (Chicago UP\, 2003)\, Uses of Literature (Blackwell’s\, 2008)\, The Limits of Critique (Chicago UP\, 2015)\, and Hooked: Art and Attachment (Chicago UP\, 2020). \nMore information: Eva Kruuse\, eva.kruuse@tlu.ee. \nProgramme \n

\n\n\n30.09-2.10.2024 (three full-day course)University of Tartu (specific room details will be announced in August/September) \nThe target group includes 20 young researchers and doctoral students who are interested in pursuing a career in academia and writing research grants. \nCourse will be taught by dr. Sabina Hirshfield who is a visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine\, STAR Program at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn\, NY. As a U.S. public health scientist and a nationally recognized expert with more than two decades of grant writing experience\, Dr. Hirshfield has collaborated on over 30 federally funded HIV prevention studies and maintains a strong publication record. She excels as a research-development strategist\, specializing in crafting compelling research grants\, a core and critical aspect of her academic role. Additionally\, she serves on three editorial boards and has contributed as an ad hoc reviewer for 27 peer-reviewed journals in HIV\, infectious diseases\, and public health. Dr. Hirshfield’s expertise extends to innovative e-Health behavioral research\, and she has served as an NIH grant reviewer for 8 years. \nConsidering how low the success rate is for grant funding\, there is a critical need to educate junior scholars by broadening research skills\, providing examples of successes and failures in the grant writing process\, and expanding knowledge on writing high-quality research proposals. \nThis course will make you think about your academic career\, what it takes to succeed in academia\, and how to fund your research (steps on writing a grant proposal). The final course syllabus will be sent in August/September. Before the course starts\, you’ll receive a short questionnaire to tell us what you need and expect from the course\, so we can make sure it meets your needs. \nFor registration use link: https://forms.office.com/e/sKXNBD5uY5 \nRegistration deadline 8.09.2024 \nFurther information: Anna.tisler@ut.ee \nWith support of the Estonian Doctoral School for Medical and Health Sciences\, Veterinary Medicine and the Fulbright Specialist Program

DESCRIPTION:30.09.-02.10.2024\nTartu \nThis event is in English \nSeminari fookuses on linnatõlge – interdistsiplinaarne valdkond\, mida uuritakse tõlkeõpetuse\, semiootika ja ajaloouuringute vaatenurgast. Seminaril käsitletakse kuidas kriitiliselt reflekteerida tähendusloome aspekte lähtudes linna ajaloolistest kihtidest ja kuidas neid kihte saab rakendada metoodiliste reflektsioonidena oma uurimistöös. \nLoe rohkem: https://humanitaarteadused.ut.ee/en/content/phd-research-seminar-methodologies-city-translation-research \nKontakt: Luc van Doorslaer\, luc.vandoorslaer@ut.ee \nEesti doktorikooli humanitaarteaduste ja kunstide haru \n\nThe seminar will focus on city translation\, an interdisciplinary field that will be examined from translation studies\, semiotics\, and historical research perspectives.
