Intensive seminar „ Close Reading Across Literature, Film and Visual Culture“

The workshop will be held in English. Doctoral researchers from the faculty of Humanities and Arts (literature, film, visual culture) are welcome to attend.

Credits: 1 ECTS

Intensive, discussion-based seminar on close reading of literary works, films and other works of visual culture, where close-reading is understood as the practical dialogue between theoretical concepts and empirical materials that shapes an individual scholar’s writing and research style.

Format

Small-group seminar across two days: participants briefly present their research topic and methodological challenges; senior colleagues and peers lead structured discussions and share approaches, no formal lectures. The seminar is aimed at collaborative reflection, mapping thematic overlaps, and fostering scholarly affinities in an informal setting. Participants will articulate the methodological framing of their projects, receive targeted peer and senior feedback on linking theory to materials, and refine a plan for integrating methodological choices into future writing.

Selection based on relevance of research (fit with seminar approach), short motivation statement (100–200 words), aim to balance participants across institutions (Tallinn/Tartu) and fields (literature, film, visual culture).
