Writing Retreat

Writing Retreat at Kääriku is unique opportunity to dedicate focused time to your writing in an inspiring South-Estonian environment.
This year we will have Prof. Emeritus Howy Jacobs from the University of Tampere, who will lead an interactive EMBO-style masterclass with extensive Q&A sessions on:
- Scientific Writing 101
- Navigating the Journal Landscape
- The What and the Why of Reviews and Commentaries
- Integrity in Scientific Writing
Howy Jacobs is a British molecular biologist based in Finland and has been a professor at Tampere University since 1996. He served as Director of the Institute of Biotechnology in Helsinki from 2015 to 2017. His research focuses on the genetics, cell biology, and pathophysiology of mitochondria, studied using various model organisms. From 2009 to 2014, he was Chief Editor of EMBO Reports, one of EMBO’s flagship journals, and he currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of Fly. He brings extensive experience in how research journals operate and manage the publication process. He is also a prolific commentator on research policy and scientific activity. In addition, the camp will include sessions on data management and entrepreneurship in science, as well as personal stories from early-career researchers who have successfully established themselves after completing their PhD.
As in previous years, there will be opportunities for 1-to-1 mentoring. Participants will receive individualized feedback on their ongoing PhD projects and manuscript ideas. This is your chance to gain direct insight from an experienced scholar and ask the questions that matter most to you.
- The participants are offered accommodation (in double rooms), meals and transport to and from Tartu and Kääriku.
- Participants are expected to attend for the full duration of the writing retreat.
