The Estonian Doctoral School of Social Sciences invites doctoral students and supervisors to attend a guest lecture “Practical Guidance for Methodology: A Case Study” by Professor Peter Oestmann (University of Münster).
The lecture will take place on March 3rd from 14:00 to 17:00 at the School of Law, Kaarli pst 3-101, Tallinn.
This lecture explores the key stages of academic legal writing, from defining a research topic to analyzing legal sources and structuring a dissertation. The lecture covers essential aspects such as formulating research questions and selecting appropriate methodologies, creating a well-organized outline, and structuring the introduction, main body, and conclusions of a scholarly work. Special attention will be given to working with legal texts, evaluating relevant literature, and analyzing case law.
Discussions will be guided by practical examples, including a recently defended dissertation from Tartu, allowing participants to apply theoretical concepts to real research challenges. Doctoral students are encouraged to bring forward their individual difficulties related to each of these topics, ensuring an interactive and problem-oriented learning experience.
Peter Oestmann is a Professor of Civil Law and Legal History at the University of Münster.
