Predatory Journals/Publishers and How to Avoid Them

In an era of rapidly expanding academic publishing, the rise of predatory journals and publishers poses a serious threat to research integrity and scholarly reputation. This seminar will equip researchers with the tools to identify, avoid, and respond to predatory publishing practices.

Participants will receive an overview:

  • What defines a predatory journal or publisher
  • The history and evolution of predatory publishing
  • Red flags and practical tools for journal verification
  • What to do if you've unknowingly published in one

With real-world examples, expert insights, and trusted resources, this session is essential for anyone navigating the complex world of academic publishing.

  • Understand the nature and risks of predatory publishing
  • Develop critical evaluation skills for journals and publishers
  • Know how to respond if involved with a predatory publisher

The training will be conducted by Kalmer Lauk.‎ Kalmer is a research and development analyst at the University of Tartu Grant Office. He works with the collection, analysis, and presentation of R&D statistics and manages the research funding database Pivot-RP. Kalmer has published several articles on the publication activity of University of Tartu researchers in top international journals, as well as on their success in the global research funding landscape.
