Open Access Series: Where Should You Deposit Your Research Data? A Practical Guide to Selecting a Repository and Publishing Data

This webinar provides doctoral students with a practical overview of how to select a suitable repository for their research data and prepare a dataset for publication.

The webinar will address the following topics:

• How should you choose a repository? We will examine the repositories available to researchers, their advantages and limitations, and ways to identify a repository suited to your field of research.
• Why is a README file important? We will discuss best practices for preparing README files and introduce tools that can support their creation.
• How can access to data be managed in a repository? We will discuss open and restricted access, embargo periods, and options for sharing unpublished data, including data containing personal information.

As a practical example, we will explore DataDOI, the University of Tartu’s research data repository, and the new functionality introduced following its migration to the Dataverse platform. Through practical examples, we will examine how the repository’s features support the description and publication of research data, as well as the management of access to it.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to assess which repository is suitable for their dataset, determine how access to the data should be managed, and prepare the dataset for publication.

Facilitator
Merilen Ivask-Oprelianska - Senior Specialist for Research Database at the University of Tartu Library. Her primary responsibilities include the development and administration of DataDOI, the University of Tartu’s research data repository. She advises researchers on using the repository and on matters related to the preservation, description, publication, and accessibility of research data.
