Summer School “Designing Human Technologies”

The summer school is open to doctoral students from all disciplines.

Designing human technologies is a broad participatory design oriented research approach with human-centered principles. The notion of technology is understood broadly, including information and communication technologies, process technologies, sustainable environmental technologies, energy technologies, and technologies for design in urban, nature, or other spatial settings.

The course is held in English and is meant for PhD students, whose project could be connected to design of products or services and related to human collaboration through users, citizens, stakeholders, etc. The course will be conducted as a blend of lectures and discussions in small groups. Shared rooms, meals and transportation from Tallinn will be provided free of charge to the selected participants. Participants must arrange and pay for their own travel to Tallinn, Estonia.

Applications are to be submitted online via this form HERE. Registration deadline is on March 10, 2025.

Notification of admission: 17 March 2025. Notifications are sent by email and, if accepted, you’ll be given the full programme and further instructions.

Position paper submission deadline: 7 April 2025. The paper (up to 6 pages) should elaborate on research questions, methodological reflections, theories, and their relation to participatory design, as well as a selection of achieved and/or expected outcomes.

The maximum number of participants is 20. Doctoral students, whose research topics are closer to the course’s aims, will be preferred in case the participant limit is exceeded.
