The Urban-Rural Nexus in Research Methodology: Rethinking Units of Analysis

08/06 10/06

📍 Tartu

The event will be held in English.

This PhD research seminar – organised by the Estonian Doctoral School for Humanities and Arts – focuses on methodological and categorisation issues faced by many doctoral researchers (particularly, but not exclusively, in the humanities). It will zoom in on linguistic landscaping and city translation methods from an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing on available expertise in translation studies, sociolinguistics, and intercultural communication.

Participants will be encouraged to engage actively and reflect critically on spatial, linguistic, and cultural categories, for example, through a hands-on linguistic landscaping exercise in Tartu. The seminar welcomes PhD projects not only about cities or rural spaces, but also those that use spatial categories metaphorically or analytically (e.g. center-periphery dynamics in media, discourse, or cultural production).

Register yourself HERE. The registration deadline is April 3, 2026.
The maximum number of participants is 15. An important selection criterion is the answer to the motivation questions in the registration form (Reason for applying to the seminar and the expected benefits from this research seminar)

In case of questions, please contact Luc van Doorslaer (luc.vandoorslaer@ut.ee) or Anne-Mari Abroi (anne-mari.abroi@ut.ee).
