An International Workshop on Animal Ethics: “Animal Ethics at the Boundaries of the Human: Moral Status and Normative Authority”
09/03 10:00 – 17:30
📍 Jakobi 2-336, Tartu
This workshop will be conducted in English.
This workshop brings together historical and contemporary perspectives on animal ethics, focusing on questions of moral status, normativity, and authority. We will examine how ethical concern for animals can be justified, what grounds moral and legal obligations toward non-human animals, and how concepts such as care, self-knowledge, rights, and freedom shape these debates—from ancient philosophy to contemporary political theory.
Doctoral researchers from all fields of research are welcome to attend and participate in discussion. The workshop offers an opportunity to engage with distinguished scholars, explore foundational normative questions in animal ethics, and reflect on how philosophical theories translate into ethical and political claims about our responsibilities toward animals.
