SLiM Workshop for Evolutionary Modelling
15/06 09:00 – 19/06 17:00
📍at the University of Tartu Library's (W. Struve 1, Tartu)
The event will be held in English.
What is SliM?
SLiM is a powerful software package for individual-based, genetically explicit evolutionary simulations. It is flexible, scriptable, and fast, featuring an interactive graphical modeling environment that makes it ideal for exploring a wide range of evolutionary scenarios.
What can I use SLiM for?
SLiM enables forward genetic simulations, modeling individual organisms and their genomes through time from an initial state. It can be used to:
- Explore expected genomic patterns under specific (and arbitrarily complex) demographic scenarios (e.g., bottlenecks, expansions, selection).
- Generate neutral simulations to build null models.
- Produce simulated data to train machine-learning classifiers that distinguish between demographic scenarios when used on real data.
- …and much more!
Workshop outline.
This five-day workshop will cover the major topics from the SLiM manual — beginning with an introduction to SLiM and its scripting language Eidos, and progressing to advanced topics.
The core material fits into four days, while the final day will serve as open modeling time for participants to work on their own projects.
The workshop will be conducted by Ben Haller, PhD (Cornell University).
