General information
Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is a leading form of female infertility affecting up to 4% of women under the age of 40. We have studied a diverse cohort of over 200 girls and women with idiopathic POI using whole-exome sequencing, identifying a cause in more than 15% of cases.
The functional implications of novel POI candidate genes and genetic variants have been characterised using various approaches, including multiomic analysis of patient cells, modelling in Drosophila, zebrafish or mice, and in vitro functional assays. Importantly, we have shown that genomic sequencing can alter and improve patient management and outcomes, enabling early intervention for associated comorbidities.
