Workshop “The idea of sanity”
02/09 – 04/09
📍 Tallinna Ülikool, ruum M-649, A-206
The workshop will be held in English. Doctoral researchers and supervisors from the faculty of Humanities and Arts are welcome to attend.
The primary aim of the workshop is to engage with the accepted dogma of current discourse on mental health, as well as historical movements to break with this dogma. We look forward to discussing topics such as the definition of sanity across a range of biopsychococial diversity, efforts to change psychiatric practices on the basis of a renewed understanding of mental health/disorders, different views of the perfectly functional as well as dysfunctional mind in different cultures, and — last but not least — the distinction between human consciousness and the quasi-mental activities of artificial entities.
We believe that these topics have a much larger bearing than simply the relations between philosophical and psychological/psychiatric discourses. The discourse of biopsychosocial diversity provides us with new ways of understanding literary heroes, social conflicts, intercultural differences and so on.
The workshop is carried out by:
Francesca Brencio, University of Birmingham, UK
Mieke Matthyssen, Ghent University, Belgium
Rein Raud, Tallinn University, Estonia
